Dear Parish Family,
In the Book of James 4:8 we hear these encouraging words - “Draw near to God and God will draw near to you.” Great words for us to contemplate as we journey through the season of Lent. This passage reminds us that faith is not a spectator sport but rather one that involves our taking action and movement towards God. Lent is an obvious time for us to step away from our overscheduled lives and take a step closer to God in order to know, serve and love him better. And when we take that step, scripture assures us that He will meet us on the playing field.
Lent is a privileged time when we have the opportunity to take an honest look at ourselves and determine whether we’re on a path that is pleasing to God or one that needs a bit of work. It’s a time to make changes for the better.
How we begin this “change for the better” involves first improving our communication with Christ through prayer. Get back in the habit of saying a morning prayer as you wake and a night prayer as you prepare for sleep. Pray a thanksgiving prayer at meals and find a spiritual book that you can pop open when you have a minute or two.
Secondly, Lent calls us to give generously of our time, treasure and talent especially to those who are in need. We hear in 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 “Remember whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” A generous spirit draws us closer to the Lord and makes us better people.
And thirdly, we are called to fast. We should fast from things that put a wedge in our relationship with God or distract us from our vocations.
Lent is a sacred time set aside each year to help us spiritually prepare for His glorious resurrection on Easter Sunday. Let’s do our best to enter Easter with eyes and hearts wide open.
Have a great Lent everyone.
Peace,
Fr. Rick
