Lessons and Carols 2020
Lessons and Carols is a service of Scripture and song that began in England in the late 1800s. The cherished tradition we know today is based on the Festival of Lessons and Carols that was introduced on Christmas Eve 1918 at Kings College Chapel, Cambridge. This year, especially, it is interesting to note that 1918 was also a time of the pandemic.
Our Blessed Sacrament Parish’s virtual service is adapted from the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols that has been enjoyed for over 100 years. We listen to nine brief Scripture lessons, which recount the Fall, the promise of a Messiah, the Birth of Jesus, the Shepherds, the Wise Men, and the Incarnation. The singing of a carol or a hymn highlights each lesson’s message. We hope you will enjoy singing along to some of your favorite carols along with St. Bernard and St. Matthew Choir members while snug and warm in your own home.
